Fat Fusion Posted February 12, 2014 at 02:47 AM Report Share Posted February 12, 2014 at 02:47 AM Guys 'n Gals, Here's some pictures of how to check your air filter. It's easy to do with a T25 Torx driver. There's five screws. When you put them back in you notice a point where the resistance increases dramatically. Go about another 1/8 of a turn. No need to over tighten them. What I found at 10,000 total miles was a filter that didn't need replacing. More than half of those were using the ICE. jeff_h, FusionEnergi, meyersnole and 2 others
mmmhmmmm Posted February 23, 2014 at 09:51 PM Report Share Posted February 23, 2014 at 09:51 PM Great post! While replacing my air filter I noticed that the route the air takes through the air box is, well, restrictive. I studied this thinking about creating a cold-air intake before deciding to leave it alone. There is a large rectangular piece of sound-deadening material on the top inside of the air filter cover - in the fresh air stream. It's probably there in case the car backfires. I removed it, unclogging the air stream somewhat. It went to the curb with last week's trash or I'd snap a photo. So far no backfires, but if the car DOES happen to backfire and perhaps blast a hole through the air cleaner cover...I'll post a pic! Heelstriker Posted July 12, 2023 at 02:00 AM Report Share Posted July 12, 2023 at 02:00 AM I know this is an old post, but has anyone else removed that extra part in the filter cover? The bosses to mine are all broken, so I will either remove that completely, epoxy it on, or buy a new one.
jsamp Posted July 12, 2023 at 03:59 AM Report Share Posted July 12, 2023 at 03:59 AM That might be the "sound-deadening material" spoken of in the post right above yours. I didn't even notice it on mine when I replaced my air filter last year.
Heelstriker Posted July 12, 2023 at 07:06 PM Report Share Posted July 12, 2023 at 07:06 PM Yes, I'm sure it is the same thing, but I was hoping for confirmation that was its true purpose. If that poster is still running 9 years later without it, then it must be OK to do without it. I had contacted my dealer and of course they were not familiar with it. I'm not sure how mine broke, but it might be a good thing for people to check their own, since it left screws and broken plastic rattling around in the air cleaner box, post filter. Luckily there is a grille on the intake.
