Stale gasoline?

If the gasoline gets stale the car will automatically burn it.  The car will start burning it after 18 months.  Once the burn starts it will have to burn at least one gallon.  You can stop the burn by adding 1 gallon.  It will then determine when the next burn will start.  I've never encountered that since I take two trips per year that burn two tanks of gas.

Much appreciated.   I asked a sales guy and manager at the Ford dealership this question and got two different results.   The manager suggested putting in an additive if I don't refuel in 6 months or so while the sales guy never heard of this and said I should burn off gas every month.   I had the feeling the sales guy was wrong.

If it's any consolidation... I just gassed up my car yesterday... after 1 year, 2 months, 4 days.  As Murphy indicated, the car will go in to a 'fuel freshness mode' if you haven't added any gas within an 18 month period.  It will burn all of the gas down to 1 gallon (not 1 gallon at a time).  You can add gas at any time to bring it back out of that mode and it will recalculate how long it can go before kicking back to Fuel Freshness (but doesn't state how long).

The fuel system is a sealed, pressurized system which enables the gas to last longer.  Not only that, but fuel nowadays comes with tons of additives (cleaners, stabilizers, etc) to make that last much longer too.

About the only person here on the forum who may actually hit that mode is FusionEnergi... 99% of his travels are solely EV mode and he's in a more moderate climate.

If you live in a cold climate (up north, such as Michigan) then you'll probably wind up not using EV mode as much as you will during the summer... or if you're down south a ways (FL, AZ) then you'll probably use more gas during the summer months.

It's covered in the Owner's manual.

I hope I don't step on anyone's toes but sales people can answer any question that you ask, with a good sounding response, whether or not they know anything about the subject.  My boss asked a salesman a detailed question about a disk drive (the disks were three feet in diameter).  While he was answering the question I looked over his shoulder to see what he was writing.  It was "Find out how xyz works".
