Sticker MPG

I am looking at purchasing a 2014/5 Fusion Energi SE. While test driving, I thought the Fusion Energi SE stickers showed the same MPG as the SE Hybrid. That is 44/41. I'm currently looking  at window stickers on ford.com, and it states "electric plus gasoline" as 88 and "gasoline only" at 38.

Assuming I'm on a long trip w/o access to a plug in charge, is the mileage on this car the same as the Fusion SE Hybrid?

Remember that you have a much larger battery than the hybrid to carry around, so that will cost you mpg. The Energi really shines on shorter trips where you stay in EV mode, but still allows for the longer road trips without much penalty for the extra battery weight.

If you drive primarily long highway trips then maybe the hybrid is a better choice. If you have the opportunity to drive this on shorter commutes in EV mode then the Energi is highly recommended.

I've found that the Energi does well on long trips, we've taken trips up to NY and down to FL and 5-6 others to SC, then PA, then KY, then DE, then PA, etc etc - thousands of miles.  Most trip legs show mid 40s, lowest was 42 and highest was 56 (in mountains banking regen on long downhills to use later on flatter and slower roads).  Before that we had the SE hybrid for 35k miles, legs had better MPG but only by about 5%,  So in my experience the MPG is not that far apart that it should be the arbiter, the limited trunk space in the Energi is more of a factor so just make sure that it will be sufficient to your needs.

I might add that my Energi really shines (for me) on the around town errands, etc.  Since getting the 240V charger installed, I have not found myself with a depleted HBV from running errands or other in town travel.  Compared to my truck (12mpg in town) I'm saving a lot of gas in town where the typical vehicle gets the worst mileage.  I too take longer trips (200 - 300 miles per trip) several times a month and my historical cumulative mpg is 84mpg, just took a longer trip late last week that dropped it by 6mpg, but my in town driving will bring it back up eventually.

Since I bought my 2013 FFE in April of 2013, I have gotten a Lifetime low of 92MPG and a Lifetime high of 139MPG. That is city/town/some-highway driving. So that is an average of 115MPG.

But when I just now tried to fill out a survey from Consumer Reports, it wouldn't accept a 3-digit figure for MPG! So I had to make it 99MPG. I told them I would accept a follow-up email/phone call. so hopefully I will get the chance to tell them they need to change their survey criteria for plugin hybrids. And what about for pure EVs?

The survey was focused on new car window stickers and how to make them more accurate. I am very pleased with the mileage I'm getting, but I only drive around 25-45 miles each day. By the way, I just filled up the tank after 2+ months. I got 1072 miles out of my last tank and that's with the a/c blasting in Arizona's extreme Summer heat. I do also have a Lifetime brake score of 90, so I take every opportunity to coast and brake gently. It makes a huge difference.

The EPA estimates on the window sticker assumes you drive it like a regular car.  With slight modifications in your driving habits, you can significantly increase your mileage.  I drive mine all over (55 mile round trip commute to work, many weekend trips to VA Tech  which is 550 miles round trip) and still have a lifetime average (23k miles so far) of 105 MPG.  94% brake score.  I take every opportunity to recharge, even if it is only for an hour or two.  For example, I recharge in the parking garage at work (110v) and when we go to VA Tech, the hotel we stay in has a 110v outlet near the back of the parking lot that I use.  Simple things like accelerating a bit slower, and braking lighter and sooner (longer braking) and using the heater seats vs. the climate control can really increase your mileage.  I have to admit I felt a little guilty when Ford recently sent owners a $750 check to make up for the previous Window Sticker EPA estimates.  I'm regularly exceeding the old estimates and I don't really try that hard.
