Hmmm, battery range at full charge now on 16 miles??

All, I live in SoCal and it doesn't get that cold here.  Granted the avg daytime temp is 70 - 75 now and nighttime in the low 50's but my FFE is kept on charge in an enclosed (and insulated) garage...I have been as high as 26 miles range in the past and for the past several weeks down to 16...I can't believe the 20 deg drop in daytime highs (from 95 to 75) has that much effect on the batt range?  Can it be my driving habits <aggressive> most of the time are giving me a lower range reading?

Hi HotLap -- yes your driving habits have a large impact on the estimate of how many miles you will get and how many you actually get out of your battery.

Lot of good information in this thread (Cold Weather Observations): http://www.fordfusionenergiforum.com/topic/1446-cold-weather-observations/

and (Variability in # of miles a full charge produces?):  http://www.fordfusionenergiforum.com/topic/2040-variability-in-of-miles-a-full-charge-produces/?hl=%2Bbattery+%2Bonly&do=findComment&comment=14185

I live in SoCal and my initial miles are usually at 31 (has been the past few days). It goes down pretty fast from there, but in general I'd say it is around 26. But I drive very carefully.

Are you using the heater?  That puts a 5 kW load on the battery.  If you are try using GO times to preheat the car and then just using the seat heater instead of the main heater.

The battery estimate, and that is all that it is, is based on how the car has been driven.  If you are doing fast acceleration, that will drop the battery in a hurry.

How much juice does one seat heater use compared to the heater??

The seat heater has a 20 amp fuse so less than 240 watts.  The main heater uses up to 5000 watts.  Preheating the cabin with a GO time setting means the main heater only has to maintain the temperature.  A preheated cabin, a warm coat without the main heater, and using the seat heater can work.

Another approach is to start out in EV later mode so the ICE can warm up the car and not switch to EV Now mode until the car is completely warmed up.

Great feedback and sounds like I need to put an "egg" under the accelerator pedal :)  I just started driving mellower yesterday and this morning it was up to 17 miles on a full charge so I'll see how high I can get it!   Thanks Meyersnole for the link, I those threads are great reads and I will revisit them.  So much technology on the FFE it's impossible to learn everything first time through....still amazed at the level of technology that Ford put into this car!

  • 1 month later...

I have noticed this as well 16 miles on full charge on a 240 charger all morning. I live in the Chicago area temp was 38 today little cold.... Will this have that much of an effect on the full charge miliage number on left side display (blue battery icon). I have heard ambient air temp does have an effect. Also "miliage break in" dealer said like 3,000 miles I think? ... I only have about 840  Car rarely says 19 miles ever in the mornings...  even with go time set and nothing on and car in garage. I'm new to the forum I think its great to have this knowldge place!!!! Thanks guys!!!
