cheezsnake Posted January 3, 2015 at 11:32 PM Report Share Posted January 3, 2015 at 11:32 PM Purchased my new 2013 Fusion Energi last summer and love it so far. I reset the lifetime fuel economy after purchasing the car. My normal commute is well within the range of the EV. At one point before my first longer trip, I had driven almost 3 months without needing to add gas, and the car was approaching 250 mpg! It has since dropped to around 90 mpg. During the first few months, the EV battery gauge would peak at around 20-22 miles. As I entered the winter months, the engine would run more often (I assume because of the heater). But, I've noticed the full EV charge has dropped significantly as well. There are days, now, when the gauge will peak at 14-16 mile range after a full charge. Is this normal? murphy Posted January 4, 2015 at 12:05 AM Report Share Posted January 4, 2015 at 12:05 AM Yes it is normal. When it gets down to the 20s my HVB range estimate is cut in half. Batteries are not efficient when they are cold.
Hybridbear Posted January 5, 2015 at 09:50 PM Report Share Posted January 5, 2015 at 09:50 PM Heater use takes a lot of electricity. In addition, the transmission fluid is thicker when cold which requires more power to overcome internal friction. Finally, certain combinations of HVAC setttings & coolant temps can cause the ICE to turn on even when you have battery charge.
Rexracer Posted January 6, 2015 at 03:49 PM Report Share Posted January 6, 2015 at 03:49 PM If I have the heater on my car shows 13 miles, if I turn it off, it will jump up to 22-25.
