I do not think Ford even recognizes this as an issue. The last time I was in for service I inquired again, there was no known solution.

Things that seem to make it reset...

  • Anytime the system shuts down to conserve power
  • Anytime the system crashes, um I mean perform scheduled maintenance

I think it also resets if you change the source a number of times, but not sure. This problem is annoying, but nearly as annoying as turning off the AC compressor on the 2013 model (I think this is no longer an issue on the later models).

One thing that I have confirmed causes it to reset is a phone call thru Sync.  Someone mentioned that so I tested it and everytime I place a call, it resets to Stereo and doesn't switch back.

Interestingly, I tried the txt message feature (which works thru my cell phone) and after the message is sent, it reverts back to surround.

Should they choose to fix it, it'll likely be a dealer installed calibration update.

I took my girlfriend's 2012 Focus to a local mechanic specifically for calibration updates.  Cost 85 bucks and was worth every penny.  He's a really cool guy and let me borrow his computer and Rotunda programmer to update all of the calibrations on her car.  I've done computer work for him in the past.

Her car now drives WAY better than it did, the audio system now no longer selects random radio stations when changing sources, a very weird audio system bug when unlocking the car is now gone (subwoofer would rumble at max volume and you could hear MFT button pushes), and she also got a new screen on her instrument cluster.  Her turn signal sound changed a little, and her gear selector indicator on the screen is now in color.

First time I've done that personally.  Was a long process.  The instrument cluster calibration update took like 45 minutes to load in.

I had taken my Fusion in for the same thing at the stealership, who was nice enough to charge 550 for the same thing.  Only difference was the Focus had 3 updates, my car had 10.

I'd do this stuff myself, but the programmer is 1500 bucks, and a subscription to Ford to get those files is 800/year.

Why wasn't this done for free under warranty? The dealer has never charged for any updates we've had done. Based on the postings online of the TSBs & SSMs, you can find exactly which one to get all the updates done. Since many of the issues described in these documents aren't things that the dealer is going to waste time trying to reproduce, they just install all the updates for us, no questions asked.

I'm not that lucky it seems.  The Focus warranty was expired (she still has an extended warranty).  In another 1 1/2 years, I'll probably update my Fusion again through that mechanic.  I prefer to do as much as I can on my own.  That way I can guarantee the work I wanted was completed.  I'm just not prepared to spend 2200+ to do that kind of work on my own. :)

Wouldn't the extended warranty have covered it? If the ESP is PremiumCare, it should cover all those items.

I don't think she has the premiumcare.  Either way, I didn't know exactly how many modules were in the Fusion, and trying to locate a TSB for each one would've been a pain.  Still, I agree that those updates SHOULD'VE been free.  That was pure profit for the dealer.  Money's gone, never see it again, it's now in the past.  As far as doing the girlfriend's car, it was a cool experience, and I learned something new.

Hopefully one day I can get a great deal on one of those programmers.  It does a metric ton of dealer level diagnostics too.  With how complex the Fusion is, I may yet wind up with one in my hot little hands. :)
