Mystery EV+

I've noticed that my 2015 FFET has started going into EV+ mode when I'm still about 5 miles from home. There is no star on the nav map in the area like there is in other places where I've charged before.

It comes on, stays on for a bit, and then turns back off. Only in one specific spot - But it's an area where I've never charged. EV+ mode works as expected near other places where I charge.

I guess there's probably no harm in it, but it's a bit odd.

FWIW, I've been in EV Now mode every time I've seen it happen, I think.

Ah, that makes sense why it's doing it then - There's a gas station in that area where I often stop on my way to work. Not sure why they designed it to do that at places you don't charge, though.

It's not really focused on charging activity as the Fusion Hybrid has the same EV+ feature.  It just makes sense that people would associate the EV+ with charging since that's when people stop and turn the car off (at home, work, etc) to charge.

My EV+ only turns on approaching home where it is charged. It never turns on anywhere else including at my office parking spot (2 years/no charging) nor any other frequent destinations. My wife's 8 month old C-Max Energi never shows EV+ anywhere and I've confirmed the setting is on multiple times. Go figure.

The rhyme or reason behind it does seem strange.  My Energi did not start running EV+ when close to the parking garage near work (used the charger every single time) for over a year, I think it was about 230 trips to that location and then one day it started and did it every day since.  On the other hand, when getting close to my house I think it only took about 5-7 trips when new and also after PCM reprogramming.  So I agree - go figure.

I thought the purpose of EV+ was to favor electrical power over gas when nearing a spot where the driver is likely to charge, so that they're able to extract maximum advantage from electric driving?

The hybrid also has EV+.  I think the idea is to run on electricity as one approaches home to get the battery charge low.  The next day when the car is started the ICE will run to warm up to operating temperature and will charge the battery at the same time.  Even though the hybrid can't be plugged in home is still a place where the battery will be charged.

EV+ applies to any frequent destination regardless if you charge there.

I know this is supposed to be the case, but that doesn't seem to be the case for me.  I charge at home and at work and get EV+ when arriving at these locations, but everyday on my way to work, I make a stop at our PO Box.  I have been doing this with the car for over a year and never get EV+ when parking at the post office.  It only happens where I have charged the car -- even goes to EV+ when I'm on the freeway driving by the dealership that I have charged at only 2 times.
