Charging station tax credit

I read in another discussion that there may be a tax credit for installing a charging station.  Does this apply to installing one in one's home for one's personal use?  Or is it for commercial stations?

If it is for personal use, what are the details for getting it?

If I understand this correctly, I can get 30% of the cost of installing a charging station as a tax credit for my 2016 income tax return.

Is my understanding correct?

Yes, 30% of the cost of purchasing and installing a Level 2 charger, filed on Form 8911 for your 2015 tax return (filed in 2016 but for the 2015 tax year).

You scared me. I thought it had to be installed by 12/31/2015, and I don't have it installed yet.

It appears that the deadline for installation is 12/31/2016? Or is there a way I could install it now and still claim it on 2015 taxes?

I believe it has to be an expense in the same tax year, so if you have an EVSE purchase and installation in 2016, save the receipts to file at the end of 2016.
