jtoddk98 Posted April 3, 2016 at 09:05 PM Report Share Posted April 3, 2016 at 09:05 PM I know in the manual it states a 10k mile oil change interval, but, I drive my car on electric most of the time and at almost 7k miles on the clock the oil life monitor is showing 70% remaining. Am I OK to extend the interval to 15k miles or will that void my factory warranty?
murphy Posted April 3, 2016 at 09:25 PM Report Share Posted April 3, 2016 at 09:25 PM I don't know about the 2016 but my 2013 is 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. The manual also covers the hybrid which is 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. Verify you are reading the Energi section and not the hybrid section. jeff_h Posted April 4, 2016 at 11:28 AM Report Share Posted April 4, 2016 at 11:28 AM (edited) I don't know about the 2016 but my 2013 is 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. The manual also covers the hybrid which is 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. Verify you are reading the Energi section and not the hybrid section. Looking at the 2016 Fusion Energi Owners Manual, it's a bit confusing. Here are the things found when doing a search on "oil change": Page 155: "What is the engine oil change service interval? Change the engine oil every 10000 miles (16000 km) or once per year under normal operating conditions." Page 472: "You should change your engine oil one year or 10000 miles (16000 kilometers) from the previous oil change. Never exceed one year or 10000 miles (16000 kilometers) between oil change intervals." Later on Page 472: "Your vehicle is equipped with the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor system, which displays a message in the information display at the proper oil change interval. This interval may be up to two years or 20000 miles (32000 kilometers)." Also on Page 472: "Never exceed two years or 20000 miles (32000 kilometers) between oil change intervals." Page 476: "Do not exceed two years or 20000 miles (32000 kilometers) between service intervals." Here is what is found when searching on "10000": Page 155 (as shown above): "Change the engine oil every 10000 miles (16000 km) or once per year under normal operating conditions." Page 472 - same hits as noted above. Here is what is found when searching on "20000": Page 472 - "Your vehicle is equipped with the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor system, which displays a message in the information display at the proper oil change interval. This interval may be up to two years or 20000 miles (32000 kilometers)... Never exceed two years or 20000 miles (32000 kilometers) between oil change intervals." However, I couldn't find any distinctions/stipulations noted between the Hybrid and Energi models for any of the above. Seems like a pitfall of having a combined owners manual, if you're gonna do that then make sure things are stipulated properly when there are differences, and doesn't look like they did. At least in my manual. Right above the section you quote about the intelligent oil life monitor "fusion energi plug in hybrid." The 2016 manual makes the distinction a little less obvious. It lists an oil change interval of 10000 miles under the heading oil change indicator. Then it lists the (up to) 20000 mile interval under the heading intelligent oil life monitor (if equipped). So the 2016 manual makes the distinction by the presence of the intelligent oil life monitor (in the energi). I'm looking at the online version for the 2016, is a First Printing so I don't know if there are more recent ones - sure is not easy to discern what goes with what. 2016-Fusion-Hybrid-Energi-Owners-Manual-version-1_om_EN-US_03_2015.pdf
El-Zilcho Posted April 11, 2016 at 03:01 AM Report Share Posted April 11, 2016 at 03:01 AM If it's the factory oil then I would change it at least by 10k. That's just my opinion. However, regular use of the ICE to get it up to operating temp is good for the oil to burn off contaminants. Also, with the lower cylinder pressures from the Atkinson cycle, less blow by will probably make it to the oil, making me feel OK with long OCIs. Any motorcraft oil is high quality as well. I will personally run the 5w-20 blend.
Fat Fusion Posted April 12, 2016 at 12:11 AM Report Share Posted April 12, 2016 at 12:11 AM FWIW, in my real world with more electric driving than not, I changed the oil for the first time at 10k. I next went 15k, changing at 25k. I don't remember if I checked the monitor, but both times so far I reset the monitor. Anyway, next I WATCHED THE MONITOR and changed it right before 45k and before the life on the oil monitor went below 5%. I reference my thread here to get tools ready and make sure I have everything ready to go. http://www.fordfusionenergiforum.com/topic/1749-is-there-an-oil-change-how-to-anywhere-for-the-energi/
