Neil Posted June 2, 2016 at 07:24 PM Report Share Posted June 2, 2016 at 07:24 PM Two days in a row now my car has had an 'External fault" error that has prevented it from charging. Does anyone know what this error means? Below are the records from My Ford Mobile. it shows that on 5/31 my car finished charging at 10:44am. I went to lunch and plugged it back in at 11:39 and it experienced an 'external fault'. That was on the charger at my work which is a 240v Chargepoint Level II. Later that day I plugged it in at home (120v, Level I charger) and it successfully completed charging at 12:34am the next morning. I drove to work, charged on the Level II charger and then drove home, where it failed to charge on my home Level I charger (6/1, 7:49pm). Today it charged just fine on the Level II charger at work. Does anyone know what would cause this type of error? The car has 52K miles on it, and the battery has begun to slight degrade - a full charge is 5.7kw. I feel like it used more when the battery was new (approx. 6kw) not sure about that though. 06/02/2016 10:37:57 amNeil's Fusion: Charge complete06/01/2016 7:49:43 pmNeil's Fusion: Scheduled charge did not begin - external fault06/01/2016 10:48:40 amNeil's Fusion: Charge complete06/01/2016 12:34:12 amNeil's Fusion: Charge complete05/31/2016 3:11:39 pmNeil's Fusion: Scheduled charge did not begin - external fault05/31/2016 10:44:12 amNeil's Fusion: Charge complete
jeff_h Posted June 2, 2016 at 09:39 PM Report Share Posted June 2, 2016 at 09:39 PM The only time I've experienced that is when the car was charging in the garage and power went out unexpectedly. Of course your power didn't likely go out but the symptom of losing connectivity unexpectedly seems similar. It's good that you noted that you encountered the issue with more than one EVSE charger. I don't know if there would be a stored trouble code for this, but worth a trip to the dealer to see if there is - and then if there's a trouble code that indicates some contact or module is going bad, you've got your answer. Might also be something more minor such as the charge port on the car has some dirt or junk in it that is affecting the connectivity, so probably a good idea to take a flashlight and get a good look at that to see if there's anything obvious.
