Denied Warranty Coverage for OEM Charging Cable Failure

I have a 2013 Fusion Titanium Energi with 59000 miles (~75% EV miles).  Its been largely trouble free overall and almost completely trouble free on the EV components.  A week ago, my 110 volt "convenience charging cable" that comes with the car thew the solid red triangle of death symbol and refused to charge.  Tried with several different outlets with same result.  Using an alternate chargers (Level 1 or Level 2) charges fine.

I was due to take the car in for service anyway so I brought in the car with charging cable and heard from the dealer that the cable was not covered under the 8yr/100000 mile EV components warranty.  I tried to appeal to the Ford warranty support line directly to no avail.  It seems the same part would be covered for the Focus Electric, but not the Fusion.  Thought y'all would like to know.

Curious if anyone has had success with making a claim outside of 3/36k warranty for this item.

If the Ford rep still monitors these posts - I'd be interested in their perspective.  Seems pretty disappointing on what I would consider a "solid state" component with no moving parts to only last 3 years.

I'll comb through the other postings for suggestions on replacing the unit.  If anyone knows of a good source/deal other than the dealership, please chime in.  I don't want a level 2 charger at present - I'm renting my house.

Thanks!

Try to find somebody about to turn their car in at the end of their lease and trade with them.  If Ford doesn't consider it to be important to the function of a PHEV, they won't mind getting the defective one back with the lease return.

Wow, you got it to last three years? I've had the car for 21 months and I'm on my third one. Ford really screwed up on their OEM EVSE.

Try Ebay, you can buy them online there.  Sadly I had to buy one as mine was stolen, and I hoped that the one I was buying wasn't, but you could never be sure.

I would recommend going here: http://www.ev-institute.com/portable_products.html

I gave up on Ford and bought the EVI Deluxe Portable Smart Charger. The Deluxe will do both L1 (12A) and L2 (16A) and is way cheaper than the only other portable combo L1/L2 solution (the AeroVironment TurboCord Dual). It's been flawless for the last several months and is noticeably better built than the Ford one. Right now I'm carting it back and forth to work every day, eventually I'll get 240V to my garage and install a more permanent solution for home but for now, the EVI is standing up to the abuse of being carted back and forth everywhere very well.

The ability to do L2 when I find a 240V outlet is a nice bonus. The "Standard" version comes with the L6-20 plug that's built in along with an adapter to a 5-15 (standard 120V) plug. I bought the "Plus" version that also includes an adapter for the 14-50 ("RV") plug, and built my own adapters for the L6-30 and 6-50 that I occasionally have access to.

FlyingCheeseHead thanks for the suggestion. I am a new owner and was looking to find something that I could plug into my 14-50 at home and didn't know they had products like this that can use 120v or 240v. Do I have to adjust the charging amps manually on the box or is it done automatically by the controller/box or does the car systems do it automatically?.
