Unable to open doors, no charging indicator light when plugged in.

2013 Energi.  Fully charged and ran well yesterday, though 1 remote didn't work. Today, neither remote works, as well as the keyless code. Also, when I plugged it into the usual outlet, the charging indicator light did not come on.  The outlet is working (based on the green indicator light on the charger itself).

From reading other posts, I learned that the remotes contain a key, but my keys are both absent.  Anything I can do here. before calling for a tow?

It sounds like your 12 volt battery is dead.  You separated the halves of both remotes and the key isn't there?  Its only use is to unlock the drivers door, which allows access to the hood release lever.  Then the 12 volt battery can be jumped from the terminals under the hood to reactivate the car.

If that can't be done towing will have to be on a flat bed truck with dollies under the rear wheels.  The rear wheels are locked by the park pawl and the electrically operated parking brake.

In addition to the two fobs my car came with a key to lock/unlock the glove box.  If you have that key it may also work in the driver's door in the slot behind the removable cover.

It sounds a bit like the car was possibly repossessed and the original owner wasn't cooperative with returning the keys.  They just bought new fobs and programmed them to the car without following through with having keys cut.  I'd be inclined to get back in touch with CarMax and ask them to either get keys made for you or reimburse you for the cost of having physical keys made at the dealer.  I'm not sure about how they go about breaking into the car when the 12V battery has failed.
