Electric Plug-in "GAS" Cap

I am also now experiencing this issue. It was very difficult to open and close for a few days during and after -10c. After a few days of this it now will not latch or spring open properly and just rests sort of half open half closed.

 

I am told that it is not covered by my extended service plan and will be a diagnostic fee, labour fee and $78 for the part and that the part has not changed since it was replaced for the led not working about 12 months ago. The first two winters I owned the vehicle I had zero issue with the charging port sticking or not latching. It seems to me that the new part they're using to resolve the led issue is defective causing this spring and latch issue.

 

Ford Canada tells me they can do nothing until it is diagnosed. I told them I will not be paying for an hour diagnostic fee for them to look at it for 30 seconds and say yes it won't latch only for Ford Canada to then tell me though luck just as they did with the electric heater. Nor will I be paying out of pocket for the same part that will only break again and that I will instead be driving around with the latch open and telling everyone who points it out that Ford cannot actually fix the issue and will only charge me to throw the same defective part at it over and over.

I am glad I made this post. Seems like I was not the only one with an issue. Thankfully my door is not broken YET. But I will certainly make myself aware of the temps and weather conditions and keep it open on the colder days.

Your car is a 2017 right?  If yes, its still covered under warranty, so why not get it replaced like I did?

Yes 2017. It still opens and closes. Just gets stuck in the very cold weather. When I know it is going to be cold, I will leave it open. I can live with it until it no longer opens and closes.

I was mistaken. It did not break after days of being stiff. Now that the weather has warmed up (above freezing) it latches and springs like new. Just as others have reported here. Imo definitely a vulnerability in newer charger caps to cold weather and allowing ice to form inside the mechanism.

New door frozen shut just like the original.

 

It's -3C (26F) today.

 

Will see if it continues.  If it does, back to the dealership it goes.

 

I can't believe its not a widespread problem where there is cold weather.

Widespread? There are not that many Energi's on the road. LMAO. And how many of them are in cold weather states?

I know this was meant for VINTRE. But I will answer for myself here. The dealer showed me the WRONG way. He showed me how to push the button to OPEN it. But never explained that you need to push the button to close it.

Glad I didn't waste money getting this replaced then.  I have had this issue reoccur and disappear numerous times this winter.  Always in unison with wet then cold weather.  I wouldn't waste too much time at the dealer with this If I were you.  Thery've already replaced it with the current part and unless the part number changes replacing it again wont do much.   The cap also isn't covered even by my premium care ESP while the charger port itself should be covered under the hybrid warranty so ford obviously isn't worried about premature port failure due to faulty caps.

Yes, this is exactly what happend.  Rain and then cold.

 

I have no choice but to go to dealer as the cap actually fell off this time!

As of December 2016 43,000 FFE have been produced, I imagine, all have been sold.

 

The second question, how many in cold weather states is actually a good question.  I'm not sure but I have to imagine that since others have reported this problem, that enough have been sold in cold weather states/provinces  to bring this design flaw up.

 

I have worked for an Automotive Components company for 28 years and I can tell you that if problem parts are not reported through warranty, the OEM and parts community don't know there is a problem.

 

I see that you also have the issue but have not reported it.

 

If enough people bring the vehicle back, the warranty and dissatisfaction costs will drive the OEM to make changes.

 

While I think the swivel door is cool, at this point, I will take a reliable door that opens on hinges like the gas door.

Update.

 

Had the port door / charge ring replaced today.  Took less than an hour.

 

Works like new!  What a difference!

 

As for pushing the door closed from the "button" as shown on the video, I cant belie that this was my problem.

 

I have to believe that the majority of people close the door by rotating it closed by hand and pushing it closed.

This should be a sticky.  Opening and closing the charge port door is something i bet many people aren't explained when they buy the car.  For 4 months I've been rotating it and pushing it in, instead of pressing the button to close.  Makes a huge difference.  I had no idea that pressing the button would rotate and close the charge port door.
