Rear Brake Squeal

When rotors get wet, while sitting still, they develop rust.  When you move the car the brake pads have to scrape the rust off of the rotors.

Murphy, I have been driving for 30 years. While I fully understand what you are saying, maybe I didnt describe the sound properly. It is a screeching type of squeal that I have NEVER heard on any other car I have driven. I was thinking that the sound was possibly coming from something to do with the way the batteries re charge while braking.

Pretty sure the car will not regen in reverse. So you are using the brakes. As Murphy states, the noise is from rust on the rotors. 

 

This system is significantly different than non hybrid cars, where the brakes are not used nearly as much. I often get a noise backing out of my driveway, but clears up quickly. And I am parked in the garage.

My neighbor's Escape will do that while in reverse too.  It doesn't hurt anything... it's just that right amount of pressure to cause them to scream.  I haven't experienced it myself though.  Workarounds are simply apply more pressure to the brakes, or if it makes you completely insane, I think there are products out there that will take away brake squeal... or pull the wheel off and hit them with brake clean.

 

It's possible some dust is in between the pads and the rotor too, causing a squeal.  If you primarly regen to stop, your friction brakes are barely used.

I assume you have your brake coach enabled.  If you hit 100% on that every time you need to use your brakes to come to a complete stop, that means you stopped using regeneration rather than the friction brakes (you recaptured all the energy possible without wasting it to heat).  Now, your friction brakes will grab as you slow down under 5MPH or so... I personally can feel a slight transition when this happens, so the car DOES use the friction brakes at very low speeds.  But to stop the last 10 feet doesn't put much wear on your brakes at all.

 

My cousin's Bolt will stop completely with regeneration, which is cool.

I try to hit 100 every time. Most times I hit it. My initial thoughts when I read your earlier post was, perhaps I am doing something wrong. Or perhaps there was a SWITCH to hit that would use the electric motors to stop the car.
