Question..if I use EV now and the battery runs out...does the gas engine start up by itself? Also, if the battery drains, does riding in gas mode charge the battery?? Yes, the gas engine starts up once the battery runs out.Once HVB is depleted, riding in gas mode only charges the hybrid portion of the battery. The HVB battery is divided into two parts- one EV only and other hybrid battery. Once the EV only battery portion is depleted the car switches to hybrid mode.
