25 miles range?  They call that an 'improvement'?!?

 

I call it playing catch up to the lowest competitor (Prime).  This beats the existing weak European offerings (~11-14 miles, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes), but those will be moving to 31 miles to keep up with the upcoming European standards (50km) so once again Ford will be the laggard.

 

Sedan Competition:

Volt EREV:       53 miles

Clarity PHEV:   47 miles

Karma Revero 37 miles

Caddilac CT6   31 miles

Optima PHEV:  29 miles

Ioniq PHEV :    29 miles

Sonata PHEV:  27miles

Prime:              25 miles

Fusion Energi: 25 miles <- bottom of the barrel

 

It even falls short of several non-sedans:

Pacifica Hybrid 33 miles

Niro PHEV:       26 miles

Mitsu Outlander: 22 miles

 

Get with it Ford.  We want better.

I'm guessing they didn't want to do any real re-designing of the battery/trunk area and just found a way to increase the battery density while keeping the trunk dimensions the same as the '13-'18 models.

 

2 years ago I was hoping Ford would follow the Sonata's lead and move the battery into the "spare tire" area when they announced the 2017 facelift - even if it didn't improve EV range it would at least make the car more practical.

You and I were hoping for the same.  With the likelihood that the Fusion will die in 2020, they couldn't justify any added cost.  Just put more dense cells in the same package and call it an "upgrade".

 

The only good thing about 9kWh is that if they left the max battery output the same (35kW) then when you floor it you aren't taxing the battery quite so bad (3.9C drain rate vs 4.6C in the old battery).
