About http

  1. Those idiots passing the stopped busses had better watch out. They are putting the cameras on the bus now, so the cops will see the same thing you do. That Garmin looks like a really nice unit. Does it have a viewer that allows playback with a Google map overlay? The player that I downloaded from the manufacturer's site has a viewer with an optional pop up window on the side that shows my postion on a Google map. I can also playback with Quicktime or VLC, but I don't get the map, just the lat/long readout.
  2. And, in No. VA, I got my $850 check today via Fedex. I've had my 2013 FFE TI since May 2013 and I still love the car. Much happier with my Ford than I was with the 2004 BMW Z-4 that I sold when I bought my Fusion.
  3. If you have MyFordTouch, from the Destination or POI menu, just touch the state button. It's not illuminated so you don't know you can touch it. You want the label, not the box where your current state is displayed. If you are using voice commands, say "Change State" and Touch will ask you what state you want.
  4. I use mine almost every day. So far, nothing exciting other than the deer standing in the middle of the street, a fox crossing the road in Arlington and a school bus hitting a goose. Of course, I have lots of idiots cutting me off, running straight in the right turn only lane, and other assorted acts of bad behavior.
  5. Could be worse. The cost to update my wife's Lexus RX450h was $299. The map update was $139 with $169 labor for the installation. You don't really buy a map disk or USB. You buy a license USB that the technician uses to install the map. It takes him about an hour with the maintenance laptop hooked up to transfer the map data from his laptop to the hard disk in the car. This is why we only update the maps every three years.
  6. Russael, I don't think the video output will work well for you. It's hard enough routing the power wire from the power to camera, I can't imagine how you would connect up to the video connector in the console witthout a bunch of dangly stuff.just The video output would is fine if you are parked and want to play back what you just recorded, but for most operations, you'll want to playback on the computer. (Which reminds me that I need to order a mini to RCA cable from Monoprice.) Here's a couple of pictures how my dashcam was mounted before I snaked the cord up over the sun visor, tucked it into the A pillar and behind the glovebox to get to the power. dnorris78, The Mini 801 looks like a good one. As I understand it, the Ambarella chipset powers many of dashcams, but there are big differences in the firmware that makes for a better user interface. I really like the small size of the Mini. Let us know how you like it.
  7. I bought the DoD Tech LS430W in February and have used it almost every day. Price including shipping was $299.90 from DoD Tech and I bought a separate 32GB micro SD chip. I've been impressed with the HD clarity and low light performance. The GPS is rock solid. DoD Tech has a viewer that you download from their web site that shows your Google map position sync'ed to the video. The 32GB chip will hold about five hours of video. My only complaint is the poor instructions that come with the unit. You have to read the forums to really learn how to use the camera. Download from the camera to my computer is very slow. That's an annoyance, but not a complaint. Some cautions: Watch out for counterfeit products. If you see a price that's too good to be true, it's probably a fake and the performance will suffer. The forums have many negative reviews on the dual channel (front and rear camera) models and the 720p resolution will probably not perform well, so I;d recommend against the model Russael is looking at. Of course, there are new and improved cameras coming out almost weekly, so my experience may be dated. I notice that Garmin now has a couple of dascam models that were not available when I bought mine. They make pretty good stuff. Whatever unit you buy, make sure it has a display. You absolutely need that to adjust the camera through the window. The dashcam forums such as http://dashcamtalk.com/ and http://www.carcamcentral.com/ are very helpful (like this forum was when I bought my Energi). It looks like you guys have already shopped those. Mounting on a Fusion is somewhat difficult due to the extreme slope of the windshield. My display looks okay, but I would rather have the camera closer to the glass. I don't want to use a permanent mount (the suction cup works well) and you really don't want to mount the camera in the grid at the top of the windshield. Good luck.
  8. If you had the car started and in Reverse, the backup camera should have activated. Can you recall if that was the case? This is my first car with a backup camera and I transitioned from a manual transmission. That took a while to get used to (I still look for the clutch petal sometimes) and I relied on the backup camera as a second check that I have the car in the proper gear. I usually back in to a spot in my parking garage and have sometimes gotten confused about backing out of a parking space that I've already backed into. The backup cam has caught me before I embarassed myself. I will never buy another car without a backup cam.
  9. I got that message for the first time in 7,000 miles last week when it was very cold. I just had the oil changed in December, so I am assuming the cold weather had something to do with triggering the oil maintenance mode. The message appears so you know why the engine is running. As you'll see from other postings, many of us want to know why our engine is running when we are trying to drive to stay on electric power. If you start playing the "I want to drive on battery" game, you can go nuts trying to figure out why the engine kicked on. I've stopped playing the game, particularly since I've been running the heat.
  10. And for some reason, my Turbo Tax return calculated my credit at $4,001, not $4,007. I just did an override on the amount. Very strange.
  11. I trust you're not a goaltender. No way the leg pads would fit.
  12. And if you use the car for other than commuting, you can get to the store and back without burning any gas. Every so often, we go to the movies or out to dinner where there are free charging stations. Keeps me away from the gas pump on somebody else's electricity.
  13. Welcome Tuju. Sorry to hear about the check engine light. Some folks have had some issues with all the tech, but I guess I've been lucky. The only time I've been back to the dealer is for an oil change. I'm sure you'll love the car and if you're like me, I'm still amazed at the silent operaton on battery, even after 8 months in the car. Somehow the traffic isn't as bad when you're not burning gas. I crank up the tunes or play with the tech with stopped in traffic. And I LOVE finding the free charging stations. If you see me on the beltway or I-66, flash your lights. I'm in the '13 Bordeaux Titanium Energi with the http license plates.
  14. I got a DoD LS430W dashcam last week and have had a ball recording the crazy drivers on my commute: the lane weavers, folks driving on the shoulder, and other acts of idoicy. Haven't captured an accident yet, but I've only had the camera for a week. It sticks to the windshield right below the rear view mirror assembly housing and gets a great wide angle shot with HD clarity. The camera is GPS enabled, so I get the Google map location on playback. The camera itself is incredibly small and looks like a cheap piece of crap, but it sure does perform. My wife thinks I'm a hopeless geek.
  15. I don't use my EZ Pass often, so I keep it in the little compartment under the dash next to the cigarette lighter power plug. When I approach the toll gate, I just set the transponder on the dash up where the headlight sensor is located. (Center of the dash, as far forward as possible, directly under the rear view mirror.) Haven't had a problem so far. I really don't want that big white box stuck up on my windshield permanently.
