Can't do that, the main battery is dead and the system in locked into the auto mode which is hybrid operation.  You can never get back out of that unless you plug in the car somewhere, coasting and brakes are not going to do it unless you go down a mountain.

Yes, but you would use up the ICE getting back up to speed.

That what happens on my evening commute with stop and go traffic. Right before I go down hill, I'll switch (auto) and for the next 10 miles. I have stop and go traffic...and when I get on the HOV, I'll switch back (Later) and then wait to get to the local roads to switch again (auto)..but the max mph is still 60 in a 55 (middle or right lane) while I still have people doing 70ish

Try it and see if you're successful, I think you're going to have a hard time charging up the hybrid battery back into the full battery by just accelerating with the ICE and braking back down, rinse and repeat.  Something tells me its not going to work, battery will assist in the acceleration and you'll never get out of hybrid mode.

My latest trick is to engage EV later for a large hill on the way to work and then back to auto at the top.
