As an Android user, that button is really important to the way I use the phone. I'd be afraid they would forget the reverse gear on their vehicle. ;) I don't even get the concept of a dedicated "Back" button. If you want to go back to the previous app - Double-tap on the Home button. If you've opened an app from within another app, there is a "Back to <app name>..." button. What happens on Android if you are in a web browser and you tap the Back button? Does it go back to the previous web page, or the previous app? What happens with a second tap of the Back button? The absurdly high electricity rates of California negate a lot of the potentianl economic benefit of EV. So we'll see if the Apple car has real impact or just becomes a status symbol. Apple hasn't exactly been hitting homeruns lately. Their watch is a good example of that. I completely agree with the problem of electric rates, I feel very fortunate to live an an area with reasonable rates. I think you could point to a bunch of places where Apple is off course (phones and tablets are me too rather than innovative) and yet they are selling more than ever. It amazes me how many people bought the Apple Watch, I guess I just don't get "it". I agree, I do not have much hope that Apple will be innovative here and my hope is that it just brings more attention to the space. Honestly, a better battery (most likely solid state) is the biggest key to the expansion... but new players, especially ones like Apple keep attention on this market and are key to keep this from being just another trend. Once you upgrade your device to iOS9 you will get some text in the upper left that says back <what you are going back to> I am use to the way that flyingcheesehead mentions, which is just double tap the home and open what you want... this has always drove my wife nuts (android user) and she just declares that she hates Apple products. The browser can vary, but in general it goes back to the last page, just like the back button in a browser. With most other apps, the back button goes back to the previous display in that app; if you get to the first screen, another "back" closes the app. It means that a lot of apps work exactly the same, using the back button on the phone instead of something programmed into the app. Like with the PC/Apple world, these two design philosophies are vastly different. On a serious note, I suspect a car would be different too. With Android, I can also hit the "home" button if I desire to open a new app. What really kills me with the iPhone is working with the system menus. On Android, I can open the list of settings, go into a setting, and then the back key returns to the list of settings. One could argue that the concept of the modern smart phone was born out of the iPhone but the major innovation in this space is and has for sometime been happening on the android platform. While the iPhone is as popular as it ever has been, what is the last truly innovative thing to come from Apple? Apple pay? In general, both Apple and Android phones have been reduced to evolutionary changes... and as an iPhone user I would say that the Android platform is moving more rapidly. In some ways that reminds me of this: The difference is, Tesla makes much higher-quality products than Microsoft, and Musk is way more Jobs than Ballmer. Personally, I kinda wish they'd work together. Combining the ideas of TWO companies whose products are so great that most of their users become the "fanboy marketing department" could have some incredible results.
