My daily grind to work

I want to start a new thread about mpg out of the ford fusion energi we drive.  So to start off with I would like to say that this car has done better than I expected.  My daily grind to and from work is 70 miles.  The drive in the morning is 28 highway and 4.5 on city streets, the drive in the late afternoon is 37 miles which is all city 25 to 45 mph.  For the last 3 weeks I've been averaging 70 mpg.  The weather here has been a low 40's in the morning to the mid 50's on the way home.  I drive in EV to the freeway and switch to hybrid mode, cruise control to 62 mph and enjoy the drive.  On my drive home I will encounter a few rolling hills and one steep hill.  I use EV for everything but the steep hill, going down is about a 2 mile road, I try to get as much regen as possible.  I use 1 to .07 kwh in the morning and all the rest in the afternoon drive, for a total of 5.4 to 5.6 kwh.  My last fill up was 827 miles and I used 11.8 gallons of gas and 70.1 kwh of electricity.  That was 10 days and driving to work.  I also have a Kia hybrid that I drove to the same work site for 1.5 years that had 40 mpg life time (great car).

I use auto now, I did try and use EV for local roads in the morning and then the rest in the afternoons and I think that lowered my numbers...

I have to correct myself, my mpg so far is 51 and thats not from July, but when I had it serviced in Dec? So the mpg is just for the winter months. I hope my avg will be in the upper 60s year round. Still, its much better than my 2010 fusion hybrid living in the DC metro area

  • 3 months later...

this is my daily (this morning) commute numbers. Not bad..and my avg miles is now over 61..well, its 61.1 but keeps changing to 61 ;)

Do you see a significant improvement in MPG by saving your HVB for the afternoon? Have you tried using most of it in the morning to see if you'd get less overall gas use by doing that?

Well, I use the HVB for local roads or when I'm going down hill and breaking at the same time and my stop/go traffic on the hwy. Because of that stop/go traffic in the evenings, it goes from about 80 to over 100 mpg. I have used all of the battery in the morning and yes, I get better but it really hurts my evening...like making it in the 40s mpg. I'll post tonights and then show you tomorrow using the battery in the morning and having nothing for the evening. Now, the numbers might change a little because it got hot today and i'll be using the AC this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon. I doubt i'll use it in the morning..tho maybe I should, just to see what the diff from this morning vs tomorrow morning.

I should note that i went out to lunch so the evenings battery use wont be totally right ;)

I made a 187 mile round tripper today in the car.

The trip there ate 1.9kwh from the battery, 41% of the trip was in an EV mode, scored 53MPGe.

Trip back ate 3.1kwh from the battery, 50% in an EV mode, scored a nice 60MPGe.  Display said 1.4 gallons of gas.  This one was higher because we ran in to traffic and I put the car in to EV mode while we traveled at about 25MPH for a good 5 miles.  Was interesting watching the battery estimate actually go up while moving.

Trip was spent mostly at 65MPH with the AC on 72, recirculate turned on as well.  Oh, how I love adaptive cruise.  I will never get another vehicle without it.

I'll have to check my trip meter to see how many gallons of gas was actually used for the trip there.  I would assume around 1.6 gallons.

187 / 3 = 62.6MPG

I was right with ya this past weekend, 116 miles on one charge, 1.83 gallons or 63.5 mpg.  First trip all EV to Dunkin donuts before getting on the highway.

Nice work!

Why does one trip say MPGe in MFM and one says MPG? You must have been going more slowly than I was. My drive was about 2 miles city and 118 miles freeway at 65+ MPH.

Because I have the option in the car to switch from Fuel only to Fuel and Electric.  When I do Fuel and Electric MFM and the car reports MPGe, when I choose fuel only then the car reports MPG.

I use MPGe when I drive all electric and MPG when I run the engine in combination with the battery.  Makes more sense that way to me.

I drove 65mph on the highway but the slower on route 12 and 140 as the speed limits are slower.  You can see the details of that post on the Cmax forum (4th trip to NH out of state).

I have always left our car on MPGe. So if I switch the display in the car back & forth from trip to trip the MFM trip log will show whichever unit was selected when the car was turned off? I like MPGe even when I'm running the ICE so that the overall number still factors in the electricity use, but that's just my personal preference. I'll go check out your thread on the C-Max Energi Forum.

Yes, if you switch the car to MPG then MFM will show MPG not MPGe.  That's how it worked originally for us lucky folks who got the cars before MPGe got hacked out.

The reason I use MPG when the engine runs is that all the electric I get at home or on the road is free, so, the overall performance of the car is what it burned for gas for the total trip, or MPG.

MPGe I use when driving electric only so I can gage how well I'm driving and get a live indicator of my MPGe which I can correlate to range from experience.  The car does the same but I like to see the mpge as MPG is going to show 999.9 which is meaningless.  Using MPGe for me is for that (feedback of how I'm driving) and has nothing to do with cost of electric.

Cool! I didn't know that. How is your electricity at home free?

I also like MPGe while driving for the instant feedback about the trip. I reset the MPGe display on the Empower screen at the end of every trip so that I can track my trips.

Solar panels, have not paid an electric bill since August of 2013, instead I use electric for free plus I get a paycheck monthly for excess electric not used not to mention quarterly SREC payments.

As far as your settings in your car, I understand you like to see total electric and fuel combined, but you plugged in your car for free at the hotel because you stayed overnight and at the garage while you ate or did something else, so the bottom line for your car's performance is the MPG number not MPGe.

If you had a hybrid and didn't have the option to plug it in, then the car would report MPG to you not MPGe.

Similarly if you had an ICE car, you would fill it up and be excited that you pumped back in 10 gallons after a 300 mile trip and got 30mpg.

Not true. If I was only concerned about my cost then MPG would be the right number in this case. But I'm concerned with total energy use. MPGe shows total energy use.

I would like to have both in my 2014 C-Max, but on the other hand, I can view raw MPG in the car, and MPGe on the MFM site.
