Ford techs have to personally see intermittent electronic issues

Recommended Posts

As said earlier, Canadian cars are not supported by the VHR system.  The manual describes the light as the service engine soon light.  Indicating an issue with the vehicles "emission control system."  From everything the manual says about this light, it would very unlikely the HVB fan is related.  Maybe we're talking about different lights or the rep you spoke to at the dealership was mistaken.

I have an appointment booked for Tuesday to try to find source of these intermittent issues and the powertrain faults.  Was just updating this thread.

Thanks larryh.  I guess the manual is misleading about this light.  Though somewhat disappointed in the lack of weatherproofing of this vehicle and I really hope the dealership doesn't wave this off as simply weather again and it will help them find the source of the other intermittent issues.  As I said before, this morning, with this light, there was no snow or other weather related issues near the car.  It was inside the garage all night and dry but cold.

The ECM and PCM you list above are the emission control and powertrain control module?  So potentially related to the powertrain faults I had previously?  Along with the GPS and instrument module potentially related to the previous intermittent electronic issues.

ECM = Engine Control Module monitors driver inputs and controls engine related functions.

PCM = Powertrain Control module interprets driver inputs and controls energy management, generator, and motor functions.

The GPS and Instrument Panel Cluster faults will not illuminate the MIL.  My guess is that the ABS module fault caused the MIL.

All the faults that I listed above were retrievable months after the MIL turned off.  If there are any DTCs, the dealer should be able to read them.  I have no trouble finding them with ForScan.

I occured to me that both times the powertrain fault light came on were also the only times I had used the remote start in about a month.

I tried the remote start leaving work today. The lights flashed as usual but when I got out to the car there was no sign the car had remote started at all. Tried a few more times both in and out of the car with nothing but the lights flashing and the horn honking. Nothing on the lcds and nothing from the hvac.

Little red light blinked on the key fob.

Remote start from the Mfm app is similar behaviour. Lights flash and horn honks. Nothing on any lcd and nothing from the hvac. One press of the start button in the app had the lights flash and horn honk as it would for a remote start three times. Each set about 10 seconds apart.

A maximum of two remote starts is permitted within the same hour.  After two have been tried an hour has to elapse before the car will accept another one.  Or if the car is started manually that also will reset the timer.  A red blink on the keyfob means the request was rejected.  If the request is accepted the keyfob will blink green.

Is remote start enabled in the car?  You can try this checklist:

The remote start system will not work if:
• the ignition is on
• the alarm system triggered
• you disable the feature
• the hood is open
• the transmission is not in P
• the vehicle battery voltage is too low
• the service engine soon light is on.

It won't work if the MIL is on.

Picked up the car yesterday.  A purge valve, part of the EC system, was replaced to resolve the service engine soon light.  The powertrain fault was an undefined code, so "not a concern at this point."  They were still unable to reproduce any of the electronic issues.  While I was trying to with a tech in the car, a new semi-issue (unintended behavior) appeared.  The touch screen would not reliably display the listen (and other options) dialog on receiving texts. He said it was likely a software issue that he couldn't anything about but would try to look in to it.

They however did not even try to reproduce the rattling noise during preconditioning.  Their chargers were blocked by an ICE they 'could' not (or more correctly imo, 'would' not) move.  The instructions from the ford Canada 'hotline' were to reproduce the condition of the precondition issue and compare to a like model.  They had no like model on the lot to compare to or borrow a charge cord from to work around their chargers being blocked.  A service tech eventually said he owned one and could bring his cord in and try to compare the noise with his but I had already driven the loaner back in, making an extra stop to fill it up, on the telephone statement that my car was "ready to go" with no mention of an inability to check certain things or that they had only really resolved one issue.

At this point I am going to be asking the ford Canada rep would called me early this week about this to recommend me a southern Ontario dealership who has the most experience with servicing engeri and focus electric models.
