Range does NOT drop with A/C ?

Hello All,

2017 FFE.

With the cold Winter here now in Southern Ontario, of course, I have lost a tremendous amount of range.  I am down to 25kms (15 miles) per charge.

In the Summer, I use the A/C and noticed that I was still getting great range, 37 kms (22miles).

I would have thought that the use of AC would reduce range the same as using the heater in the Winter does.

Anyone else see the same?

Just wondering.

The heater is a 5 kW resistance heater.  The A/C compressor doesn't use anywhere near that much power.

Makes sense.

I work in a company that produces Automotive parts for all OEM's including Ford.

What is interesting is that the OEM's are asking suppliers to develop heat dissipating products to keep the cabin cool.

I keep advocating that heat in the Summer is not an issue for the cabin as AC does not affect range, but cold in the Winter is a killer on range and we should be developing products that keep heat in during the Winter.

Thanks for the reply.

Vin

I also live in Southern Ontario, but drive a 2015 FFE Titanium.

The rear defroster in our vehicles automatically turn on when it's below 0C, and the light does not illuminate either; it is hard-coded to be on for several minutes once the car turns on in freezing temperatures (this claim is validated by my dealer). This greatly affects our range. Regardless, my current winter range is no more than 25km.

What is your summer mileage without using AC in Southern Ontario particularly? I haven't owned my car long enough to know. Thanks.

I've driven gas-only cars in the past and find that using A/C in the summer impacts fuel economy a LOT less than using heat in the winter. Same goes for the 2013 hybrid I traded in for the 2017 Energi.

On a hot day I will use the global windows open feature from my key fob to air out the car before I get in, and then drive around for a few minutes with the windows down but no A/C on - this is far more efficient if you can get some decent speed. Only then do I actually turn on the A/C.

I bought my Energi in November so I didn't get a chance to test out the A/C's impact yet, but I'm guessing that my preferred setting of 22C at lowest fan speed will have minimal impact, if any, on EV range and gas usage.

I also park my car in a garage, so the A/C doesn't have to work very hard if I am driving out of my house on a hot day.

For those who have easy access to Level 2 chargers, does the engine turn on if you use remote start on a hot day while the car is plugged in?

My commute to work is 44 kms.

For this commute, in the winter, I am getting between 25kms and 28kms.  I use the heat sparingly.

For the same commute in the Summer, I am getting 40kms and I use the AC generously.

Thats why I asked why I dont see a drop in range when using the AC.

Ford must have figured something out OR air conditioning on Electric vehicles doesnt  reduce range.
