First commute 160 miles, 70mpg. Is this right?

I bought a '17 SE over the weekend and did my first commute to work today.  It's 160 miles round trip and according to the trip odometer I averaged 70mpg with a full charge start and full charge at work.

Can this be right?!

The tank was near full and now it's a bit above 3/4 so that's less than 3 gallons of gas.  I was expecting 45mpg or so.

This can't be right can it?

160 miles / 70 mpg = 2.3 gallons. Even if the full charge got you 30 miles (that would be near the max possible) that would still be (160 - 30) / 2.3 = 56.5 mpg while in hybrid mode. It's definitely possible. 56 mpg is about the highest I can obtain on the highway going 55-60 mph, but it usually requires mild temperatures 60-70F and avoiding the use of heating or air conditioning.

Let's see what happens the next couple of days. Post back with updates.

My car is only used for local driving.  From late spring until early fall my engine does not run.  All driving is done on electricity only.  That means my mpg is infinite during that time.  Further I have 10 kW of PV solar panels on the roof of my house so my cost for electricity during that time is zero.  It doesn't work in the winter due to the low sun angle and snow preventing what little sun there is from hitting the panels.

Ford was in a good place when they introduced the car in 2013.  Five years later they increased the nominal range from 21 miles to 25 miles.  Now they have announced the Fusion and other sedans will be discontinued so they can focus on trucks and SUVs.  Will it help their bottom line?  I don't know but I do know that I will never buy an SUV or a truck.

He is charging 2x/day, so that is more EV miles.  That changes your calculation to closer to 44 mpg.   Still higher than average, but attainable.

I guess that makes sense.  The Regen brought it up to about 37 miles leaving 43 for gas.  If I knew that I would have bought this car as soon as I started commuting a year ago.  Ford needs to do a better job advertising this.

JTG,  You got 37 miles from a charge including regen?  Did you use the EV only at lower speeds (non-freeway)?  do you drive like a granny?  I can get over 30 around town, but never close to 37.  I guess since you went into hybrid mode that includes the extra .75kWh from plug-in mode to the middle of hybrid mode, but that should only be an additional 3 miles.  You're doing really good.
